ENJOY SUMMER..PRESERVE HEALTH

As you all will agree that the summer vacation is a big concern for the parents whose children are studying at school level. For elders there are various different reasons of worry in a summer vacation.

Actually, in early 80s or 70s children used to enjoy their summer vacation with the relatives by going to the cities or villages they reside. But now a days the trend has been changed. The parents are engaging their children at summer camps, trekking camps etc. or they are enjoying some tourism with family and friends. From March to mid-June the temperature goes up-to 40-42°C. The hot summer weather and scorching heat are restricting the people at homes. But, the summer also offers us with so many delicious food items. We all love mangoes which are only available in the summer season. If we eat them in early summer or late winter, it creates a bad effect on our health. So, we should be particular about feasting on mangoes without getting ill. Summer season is a season for Indian black berry (Jambhul) and carandus plum (Karwand). Summer is a part of Vasant and Grishma rutu. In Chaitra month plants rejuvenate and regenerate themselves. So, this season is a mix of love, enjoyment amongst lot of heat.

People love summer because they spare some time to enjoy with their relatives and children in company of all these fruits and other cool and refreshing foods like ice-cream and others. To enjoy the summer season without suffering from some physical ailments, we have to take precautions. Ayurveda recommends the use of herbs like – Wala, Chandan which gives internal cooling effects. Wala and Chandan reduce heat. We have used them in Avani Gulkand. Gulakand itself contain Rose Petals, which gives soothing and cooling effect in the body. In ancient days when there was no cooler and Air-conditioner in house, Wala was used for curtains providing good cool air. In summer, people travel a lot for tourism purpose. The harsh sunlight exposure can result in tanning (darkness) of the skin and minor blemishes. The application of the paste of Chandan is very beneficial in this condition.

As I mentioned earlier these are the mango days. The mangoes or Alphonso variety is a special produce of coastal area. Mango itself has a lot of medicinal values. Though they are available only in summer season, they are the good source of fibre, improves skin complexion and promotes hair health.

Another seasonal fruit is Indian Blackberry i.e. जांभूळ. It has an astringent taste but it is slightly sweet also. It has many medicinal values. It is a good antidiabetic drug, reduces cholesterol, good anti-oxidant, haematinic means improves blood strength, promotes weight loss and strengthen gums and teeth.

Carandus plum is another fruit named Karwand in local language. This is also found in hilly areas of coastal region, so, called as Dongarmaina (डोंगरची मैना). It is rich in medicinal values. It is a good antimicrobial and anti-fungal agent. It enhances sebum production. It is a good antiaging drug and improves skin complexion.
